Safe Fun in the Sun With SPF and Sunnies!

Safe Fun in the Sun With SPF and Sunnies!

I don’t know where you are, but in Georgia, it's hot as hell! I mean disrespectfully hot. Despite the heat, it is safe to say we all want to enjoy some outdoor time. Truth be told, the sun does help us to get a little bit of needed vitamin D. However, too much sun can cause issues in the long run. So, how does one still have fun in the warmer weather while still being safe? The answer is easy! All you need is SPF and sunglasses.

First, let's start with SPF. Basically, its sunscreen. Yes, you NEED sunscreen anytime you step outside. SPF, or sun protection factor is used to block the harmful rays of sun that come down. Its recommended that you get an SPF of 30 or higher. Personally, I like to start with SPF50. Contrary to popular disbelief, people of color/Black people do need to wear sunscreen. Yes, our melanin helps, but it is nowhere near the recommended amount needed to stop harm from the sun. The true battle is making sure we avoid the dreaded ghost face, also known as white cast. There are plenty of brown skin friendly sunscreens that block harmful rays and no white cast is left.

Next, reach for a good pair of sunglasses. Commonly known as sunnies or shades. This is where fashion and function meet. You can still have a nice pair of stylish sunnies and protect your eyes as well. You just have to make sure they can protect the eyes from uva/uvb rays. Do you have to spend $1000 for a good pair, nope! Fun fact, most sunnies are made by one large company, especially high end/designer sunglasses. A great pair can be purchased for under $100. Naturally, you want to make sure you look cute in them.

Granted, it's just a starting point. SPF and sunglasses can help with reducing damage from the sun, which includes, sun/age spots and other forms of discoloration and premature wrinkles. It can even help reduce the risk of the "Big C." The sunglasses protect your eyes from the sun and the possibility of crow's feet. To be honest, it's just good practice to wear SPF and sunnies to help make sure all of the steps in your skincare routine is not in vain, especially if you are using active ingredients. In addition to the above mention recommendations, stay hydrated, reapply your SPF, and just try to reduce the amount of time you are in the sun. You can still be cute, festive in the sun and safe!
